June 2007 - Recycle your old cell phones & inket cartridges and help save the rainforest!

Please pass this information to others! We have been talking about starting a recycling program for several months. Thanks to Vicky's hard work and research, we are now going to be able to recycle old cell phones and inkjet (not laser) cartridges. We will have enough return envelopes to hand out in the "goodie bags" at MARS. If you want me to send you a bunch of the envelopes just let me know! Or, if you see me, you can just give me your old phones or inkjet cartridges. We will get $1 for every phone and the amount varies on the inkjets. I've already been collecting cell phones so I've got several here and my fax is an inkjet and I've got a couple of those saved up already too. It's a really simple thing, you just drop the phone into a prepaid envelope and put it in the mail. It's so easy!

We can raise money for rainforest and keep those phones and cartridges out of the landfills! MARS show proceeds have purchased 2,845 rainforest acres to date! I don't have the envelopes yet, but I'll send them to anyone who wants them as soon as they get here! We can put the envelopes in businesses, vet offices or anywhere else people will let us put them.

Please visit http://www.cterrapin.org and sign the petition to stop this harvest.

November 2006 - MARS Reptile & Amphibian Rescue

MARS Reptile & Amphibian Rescue Organization is nearly 8 years old! We have placed over 1,350 animals into adoptive homes over the years. Visit the Rescue & Adoption section to see what is currently available for adoption. You may submit an online adoption application but PLEASE be local (Maryland), serious, and ready to adopt. It may take us at least a few weeks for us to review your online application.

Help reduce overpopulation of unwanted herps by not breeding green iguanas or other animals that are difficult to place. If you don’t wish to adopt, be sure to purchase an animal from a reputable breeder, like one of our MARS Vendors.

November 2006 - The 2006 MARS Show was another success!!

This year MARS was another success! We were able to raise $12,000 for rainforest purchase. Our attendance was good. The vendors were very happy and many want to come back next year.

We look forward to planning MARS 2007, which will be our 15th Anniversary!

You and a friend can have dinner at Pierpoint Restaurant in Baltimore, MD with author and television host Mark O'Shea (Animal Planet's: O'Shea's Big Adventure). Mark O'Shea is an expert on reptiles with an interest in venomous snakes. Dinner is 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14, 2005.

Mr. O'Shea is a special guest of the Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show. We are a non-profit organization trying to raise money through this auction to buy rainforest habitat.

(Sorry, the Auction has ended)

June 2005 - Come out and visit our adoption table at Petco in July

MARS Reptile & Amphibian Rescue will have an adoption table at the Petco in Timonium, Maryland (1719 York Rd.) on July 23, 2005 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

June 2005 - MARS Live on Radio (98 Rock in Baltimore)

MARS visited 98 Rock in June. Using the station's online web cam, listeners were able to see the animals while they were in the studio.

Holli Friedland, Program Director, posed with a 98 Rock employee and an albino California kingsnake (left photo). Evening DJ "Stash" chose not to pose with the animals, but he is always a gracious host! We look forward to future visits.

June 2005 - We Care!

We’ve added Care Sheets to help you care for your animals. Read our care sheets as well as those from other organizations and breeders. You can even recommend we add your favorite care sheet to our list.

June 2005 - A new kind of web site

MARS is happy to announce that we will have tarantulas for sale at this year’s show. Captive bred baby and juvenile tarantulas will now be a part of MARS. Eight Legs Plus has been added to our current vendors list which can be found here.

March 2005 - World of Pets Expo

We had a Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show table at the World of Pets Expo at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in February. We had an opportunity to talk to a lot of people about keeping reptiles and amphibians as pets. And we took photos of people with some of our animals.
(photos coming soon)

February 2005 - Mark O'Shea will appear at the 2005 Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show!

The Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show is pleased to welcome Mark O’Shea as our special guest at the show this year. You will recognize Mr. O’Shea from the films, photos and articles you have seen by him and about him. He has been the host of “O’Shea’s Big Adventure” and animal documentaries for years. Among Mr. O’Shea’s books are: A Guide to the Snakes of Papua New Guinea and the Dorling Kindersley Handbook Reptiles and Amphibians and contributed chapters to others. He also writes a column for Reptiles magazine’s website: www.reptilesmagazine.com. He’s a serious figure in the field of herpetology and not just a television personality. Mr. O’Shea has been involved with West Midland Safari Park in the United Kingdom since 1987, primarily as Curator of Reptiles, but more of a consultant presently. Mr. O’Shea will help fulfill our mission statement with regard to education. His vast experience in herps is a valuable asset. He will be happy to talk to people and answer questions about his experiences and listen to yours.

February 2005 - Bernadette the snake (MARS mascot) has passed away (obituary below)

We regret to announce that “Bernadette”, the well known MARS mascot has passed away. She was 19 ft.. long, weighed 215 pounds and was 14 years old. She mated twice during her lifetime and produced 150 babies. Owner, Tim Hoen, raised her from a 12” long baby.

Bernadette was the highlight of many educational programs to schools, camps, scout groups and at The Mid-Atlantic Reptile Show each year. In spite her size, she was known for her gentle nature and docile personality. We will miss her.
